We often invest a lot of our money purchasing good quality foods and spend time preparing healthy meals to ensure we are getting all the necessary nutrients. What about the other nutrient that is essential for life? Along with food, water is an essential nutrient for our bodies. We are made up of roughly 75 percent water. Water forms the basis of blood, digestive juices, urine and perspiration, and is contained in lean muscle, fat and bones. Water is needed for most bodily functions, including maintaining the health and integrity of every cell in the body by carrying the necessary nutrients and oxygen into the cells. Any time you’re on a detox, toxins and chemicals are carried out of your body with water. It’s logical then that drinking clean water is a critical piece of living a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies require 2-3 litres every day of clean, pure water to aid the detoxification process alone. We recently interviewed Renae Barrington from Food Matters on why detoxing is so critical and how you can do it most effectively.
While bottled water or filtered water are often a step up from what you get out of the tap, it’s important to consider that not all waters are created equal. It’s a complex issue when looking at what is in our drinking water. Drinking water according to the “Australian Drinking Water Guidelines” should be: “clear, colourless, and well aerated with no unpalatable taste or odors. It should contain no suspended matter, harmful chemical substances or pathogenic micro-organisms”.
Despite these guidelines our water supplies continue to include:
- Chlorine – Used for the treatment of water supplies to eliminate many waterborne diseases.
- Bacteria – Despite initial treatments some unwelcome forms of bacteria can still propagate between initial treatment facilities & the domestic or commercial water source.
- Organic chemicals – Many of these originate from pesticides, weed killers, commercial & domestic waste.
- Nitrate – Normally traced to the use of fertilizers & or sewage contamination. Nitrate reacts with other chemicals & forms Nitrite within the digestive tract. It can then go on to form carcinogens which at excessive levels can cause Blue baby syndrome.
- Lead – This heavy metal finds its way into our drinking water supplies between initial treatment & point of usage from old pipes or lead solder used in joining new piping systems. Lead contaminated water poses a serious health risk to all ages, including learning difficulties, behavioral problems, mental & physical retardation, hypertension, strokes & heart disease. Lead poisoning can take years before the effects can be detected but often the damage is already done.
- Aluminium – There are clear links between Aluminium & Alzheimer’s Disease. Aluminium also raises the acidity of water allowing it to absorb greater levels of lead, cadmium, copper & other heavy metals from piping systems.
- Mercury – More likely to effect people that use a natural water source it can cause ulcers, skin irritations, dental problems, internal bleeding, liver & kidney damage.
- Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – Originating from cast iron or mild steel pipelines which have been treated with asphalt or bitumen coating to prevent corrosion & are believed to be carcinogenic.
- Fluoride – Added to many of Australia’s water sources to reduce tooth cavities. The addition of fluoride to municipal water is banned in many nations & it is debated as being in contradiction of the Geneva Convention, as being mass medication without prescription. Linked to many long-term health defects. In high doses is lethal. More information
- Cadmium – Like lead accumulates in the body over a long period & may cause stomach cramps, kidney & liver damage.
- Trihalomethanes – Strong poisonous compounds formed by organic chemicals reacting with chlorine treated drinking water. Responsible for around 10 percent of rectal & bladder cancers according to The American Journal of Public Health.
With the amount of chemicals added to our drinking water, the world’s leading experts in water recommend using a water filtration device to remove any nasty neurotoxins and other heavy metals. The Environmental Working Group, EWG, a non-profit consumer watchdog group, is a reliable resource for anything related to health and toxicity, so it’s no surprise that they also have a comprehensive database on clean drinking water and the WHO’s Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality is a valuable resource in this area as well. In Australia there is the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) which provides guidance to water regulators and suppliers on monitoring and managing drinking water quality.
When you start digging around on this topic, you’ll find there is a lot of information out there and we are presenting just a fraction here, so please do your own research on finding the best filter for you, your family and your home. There are several factors to consider when choosing a water filter. What contaminants are you trying to remove or reduce (this will vary depending on where you live and whether you are accessing tap water or tank/bore water), the cost of the device and ongoing filters required and whether you’re looking for a countertop, faucet mounted or under-sink filter. If this area is of interest to you, it may be worth investigating your own water supply and having it tested.
How can you be sure these filters do what they say, without proof?
One thing to look for is certification. Most importantly ensure your filters are certified against standards set by NSF International which are the gold standard in testing for quality and safety.
The NSF International provides a range of certifications for products that involve initial and periodic testing:
- NSF 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste, odour and particles.
- NSF 53 covers health effects such as cysts (giardia, cryptosporidium), a range of organic chemicals (such as THM and pesticides) and heavy metals.
The Australian standard AS/NZS4348 covers a wide range of contaminants, such as taste, odour and microbiological and chemical impurities. There are also standards for water softeners (cation exchangers: (NSF 44), reverse-osmosis (NSF 58) and distillation (NSF 62) systems.
What contaminants are you trying to remove?
Keep in mind that filters vary significantly in the percent and types of contaminants that they are rated to remove. Some filters will remove chlorine, fluoride, lead, mercury and volatile organic compounds and some will remove inorganic pollutants such as arsenic and hexavalent chromium. Take a look at this table as published in the Journal of Toxicology on the Harmful effects of heavy metals on the body. Looking at the list of diseases that are caused by heavy metals, it’s really a no brainer on investing in a water filter. As our good friend Alexx Stuart always advises, start where you can, make small changes and upgrade to a better filter when you can afford it. It’s not about never ever having a glass of tap water again but rather being relaxed if you know you have minimised as much as you can in your own home. When we know better, we do better!
Here’s a breakdown of the different types of water filters available on the market:
Countertop filters—affordable, low-maintenance, and great for apartments and rentals. The key is to look for multi-filter systems that remove fluoride, heavy metals, etc.
Under the sink filters—great for established households and easy on the budget. These take up less room than countertop filters and can be customized with multiple filters to remove specific toxins substances.
Reverse Osmosis filters—one of the best, filter technologies available to remove a wide variety of contaminants. They’re more pricey than under-the-sink filters, and do use more water due to water rejection aspects of the technology.
Note: RO water is devoid of minerals, so it’s best to add a pinch of good quality sea salt like Celtic Salt or Pink Himalayan salt per gallon of water.
Gravity-fed countertop filters—these percolator-style filters are an excellent choice for those desiring a portable, affordable filter. Look for 100% stainless steel, clean the spigot often to prevent mold or residue, and be sure to choose a model with an effective fluoride filter.
Note: some gravity-fed water filters require maintenance to keep water filtering efficiently, such as periodically cleaning the filters.
Whole house filters—the ultimate in water filtration, whole house filters are an ideal choice for those who wish to simultaneously remove contaminants from their drinking, cooking, and bathing water using one system. They should be customized to remove a range of contaminants, not just chlorine.
Note: these are the most costly systems.
Shower/bath filters—if you can’t afford a whole house filter, we highly highly recommend using separate bath and shower filters. If you’re an asthma sufferer, you might find symptoms become worse after a hot shower. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment of the California EPA has indicated that chloroform, a type of trihalomethane, can be inhaled when bathing and showering in water containing it. This is because chlorine evaporates in the water and when you breathe in the steam, you’re also taking in chemical particles. These settle in your lungs and can heighten problems with asthma or even cause bronchitis.
